Who Are You?

February 7, 2010

Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend, otherwise known as The Who, are on stage performing their halftime set for Super Bowl XLIV. Gotta say, they sound a little flat. Here’s the setlist: “Pinball Wizard,” “Baba O’Riley,” “Who Are You,” “See Me, Feel Me,” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again.”

They sounded good on “Baba O’Riley” but, in all honesty, if you have seen Pearl Jam perform this song live, you might get a feeling of what it was like in The Who’s heyday.  Not now. We didn’t like all of the segues, some of them were awkward.

LOVE the stage. It’s like the anti-Claw. That isn’t a slam against U2. (We love The Claw. Believe us. We’ve seen it many, many times.) This is a beautiful set for a stadium show. We love the way it reacted to the music, sort like a screensaver we use called “geiss.”

By the way, we’ve heard “Wake Up” at least three five times before the start of the third quarter during the broadcast. Good to know it’s going to good use. We love the clip played because it reminds us of the intro to U2’s Vertigo Tour before the band came onstage. Good times.

Way to go, Brett. We love his sense of humor and the occasional wink at his critics:

Best Ad: Hyundai’s commercial with Brett Favre. Google’s long-distance relationship via search.  Hand’s down.  Best Super Bowl ad since the Apple Macintosh.  Way to go, Google! (We realize the ad has been on YouTube for a few months but that doesn’t make it any less compelling. This is the first time we’ve seen it.)

Great storytelling in 60 seconds or less. People have done far worse with 10 times as much time.

We also liked the brief ad for the “Late Show With David Letterman” with David, Oprah and Jay Leno. Very funny, lots of subtext.

These E-Trade commercials are laugh-out-loud hilarious.

This one is a little older but still funny. I think they had to retire the original baby because he got too old. Hollywood sure is a tough town.
